Elevator Speech

I'm Shalynn Allsup and I am a Junior majoring in Hospitality Management. I was born and raised on a dude ranch in Jackson Hole, WY called the Bar-T-Five, Covered Wagon Cookout and Wild West Show. I helped manage the business by day and sang lead vocals in the band by night.

My great, great, great, great Grandfather brought the first settlers to the Jackson area, so my roots not only run deep in Jackson, but also in entertainment. My family ran this entertainment/dinner show for over 30 years before my parents sold it several years ago and became our families first generation to leave Teton Valley.

My husband and I along with our 3 little girls, want to continue my family heritage by starting our own business where we entertain people from all over the world by reliving experiences from our Pioneer heritage. Wagons... Cowboys... Indians.... Dutch Oven Dinner... Live Band...the works!

I have supreme customer service skills, I am detail oriented and remain honest to my core. My husband is a horse enthusiast and having a degree in Agriculture will help us to maintain good stock and tack on our ranch, ensuring a safe and high quality business. We both love entertaining and welcoming people into our lives. We take great pride in reliving a western experience.

Pastry and Baking Skills

Strengths I have recognized are first, the interest factor. I have been raised in the Hospitality industry and I want to some day start my own hospitality business with my husband. I have a passion for meeting people and making them feel welcome in my world. I thrive on exceeding the needs of the people I love and tending to every detail. Also, the online access to the course is appealing for me. I am a Distance Education student and this major is tailored for students in my situation. I look forward to the Business Management classes as well as Food and Beverage production. The Pastry Baking class looks like a lot of fun… just not sure how I can do it as a Distance Ed student.

Opportunities within this field would be the skills to work with people in every network and area of life. Even outside the career of Hospitality, I will be provided with the skills to have guests in my home, serve my friends and neighbors as well as build relationships throughout my life. I am fortunate to have successful business owners as my parents to mentor me and support me in my career with an honest and sincere influence. The hospitality program will provide everything there is to offer in lodging, restaurants and vacation activities. As such, it is an ever growing field with many opportunities to develop and obtain management positions.

Some set backs I have or may have would be mostly discouragement. I am a Junior already and still have more than half of my schooling left to finish. I know I will struggle with my foreign language classes as well as Statistics and Law. But I am determined to finish and to finish well. I hope to finish before my children are old enough to realize that mom has homework, just like they do!

The thought of paying on student loan debt can seem threatening as my husband and I are both full time students living off of student loans. But I consider it an investment in my future as well as the future of my family. I am a good budgeter and time manager. Balancing school and family is the biggest struggle for me and prioritizing is harder than ever. My husband is graduating this year and I’m sure my load will be a little lighter then.

The hospitality industry is currently seeking 200,000 new executives worldwide at hotels, restaurants, resorts, food and beverage, travel and tourism, entertainment venues, spas, and a large variety of other service-oriented businesses. The lowest wage I can expect with my bachelor degree is $35,000 all the way to positions offering $150,000 annual salary.

Skills Assessment

skills I enjoy - organizing, entertaining, communicating
skills I perform well- entertaining, teaching, organizing
skills to develop- patience, active listening, technical literacy
Having children has helped me with my patience. In fact, I might even be more patient than I thought. Now that I think about it, I have a lot more patience now than I ever have. So I guess that means I am improving to some extent. I would like to work on not interrupting people. Giving them a chance to form their thoughts and giving the time to express their thoughts optimally. I am more concerned about my technical downfall for I have no interest in how things operate on a technical level.
The assessments leaned toward Social Work and working with those with Disabilities. I found this considerably inaccurate. I have never had the desire to work in that field, nor do I believe to be good at that type of work. I live to entertain. I am a born performer and have a strong passion toward hospitality and tourism. And any field with customer service, entertainment or tourism were not even close on my assessment results.
I learned that I though I was good at some things which really translates as skills "I wish" I were good at. Being faced with the reality that though I would love to be a good listener, I really find myself interrupting a lot. In the end, if I'm not a great listener, no wonder hospitality and customer service were not listed for my skills. I am determined now to brush up on my communication skills. Not only speaking well and expressing myself well, but listening also.

Transferable Skills Letter

Dear Mr. Jones,

As 5rd generation in heading a successful family business in tourism, I withhold a lifetime experience in entertainment and customer service propelling me to positive ambitions. I maintain a sincere enthusiasm for the continued rise in the hospitality industry and also embrace the challenge of a fluctuating economy. I have a passion for the business of serving customers through genuine hospitality, providing me confidence in building positive relationships every day.

The responsibilities as the Customer Service Manager at Snow King Resort should convey consistent professionalism, approachable behaviors as well as organizational skills to better act as a delegator. I consider myself one to perform these skills at optimal levels while having the discernment to always be looking for ways to improve upon them. I remain steadfast and goal oriented. I believe in customer service to be consistently superior. My professional skills include:

· Uncovering client’s needs by exuding genuine concern and appreciation

· Taking criticism well and giving criticism well

· Demonstrating computer efficiency by actively staying current with the ever changing technology in todays “cyber world”.

· Building positive relationships with colleagues, clients and strategic partners

· Conducting opportunities to learn and grow by being goal oriented and focused

I welcome the opportunity to expound on these skills as well as satisfy any reason to supplement or clarify at your request. Thank you in advance for considering me as an applicant and I anticipate your call.

Sincerely,

Shalynn Allsup
